“So many people were impressed with the quality and tone of your music. It is a phenomenal achievement to produce the standard of music you did, which was on a par with cathedral standards without the resources usually associated with a cathedral music foundation. You are all to be congratulated on the work that has been put in to create a choir that is has professional standards and with all choir members seeming to enjoy the experience so much.”
Revd Canon Michael Gisbourne, Canon Precentor, Ripon Cathedral
“What a treat. We were thrilled by you all! You are wonderful, you really are.”

Bach’s St Matthew Passion with Sheffield Bach Choir and St John’s Church Ranmoor at Sheffield Cathedral
Sunday 15 March 2025
Sheffield Bach Choir is pleased to present Bach’s St Matthew Passion in the original German, at Sheffield cathedral. Written in 1727 and featuring double choir and double orchestra, this is one of Bach’s most complex works, widely considered a masterpiece of Baroque music. It narrates Christ’s Passion as told in the Gospel of St Matthew. The story is told by soloists and chorus, punctuated by hymn tunes that would have been familiar to congregations of the time. This magnificent work is at once a sober and fitting preparation for Easter and also a superb example of Bach’s glorious composition for orchestra and voices.
