Schools

Working with Steel City Choristers enables schools to provide high quality music education. We deliver free curriculum-linked singing workshops, and resource and support non-music specialist teachers to develop pupils’ musical skills.

“After the chaos of everyone arriving, that was exactly what we needed. I feel nice and calm”

We offer dynamic and engaging workshops to meet the needs of schools and complement existing music provision. We can work with groups of varying sizes, from single classes to whole assemblies, in both primary and secondary schools across Sheffield.

We have funding to be able to offer a number of Sheffield schools six singing workshops free of charge. Ideally we like to work with Lower Key Stage 2, in which we explore singing and listening activities based on the Model Music Curriculum. We leave schools with resources designed for non-music specialists to enable them to follow up on our sessions and continue to help children develop key musical skills.

We can also offer singing assemblies, choral masterclasses for school choirs, and conducting lessons for children who would like to learn to conduct, or for music teachers who would like to improve their conducting skills.

Singing – We empower pupils to discover and develop their voices in an enjoyable and approachable way through accessible singing games and songs, including singing techniques, rounds in different time signatures, and pieces with a simple second part.

Listening – We introduce children to a recording of a piece of choral music and guide them in listening for musical features such as rhythm, metre and tempo, pitch and melody, texture, structure and form, dynamics and articulation.

We encourage teachers to signpost to us any children who love to sing.  We are currently recruiting children age 6-18.

Through both choir rehearsals and individual singing tuition, our choristers receive a fantastic musical education, and the skills of concentration and teamwork that they develop help equip them for success throughout their lives.
